To be granted a subclass 457 visa, the following stages must be achieved -
The Australian Business applies to be approved as a sponsor. Once approved, nominates the position (s) they want to fill (and often the visa applicant they wish to fill the position(s)). Finally, the nominated work (visa applicant) applies for the subclass 457 visa.
If successful, the visa will be granted for up to 4 years and the applicant worker must work for the sponsoring business or if they wish to change employers, make a new application repeating the whole process.
